Description

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), representing Italy's national railway infrastructure manager under the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, operates a dedicated mobile network primarily for railway communication and operation purposes. While not a publicly accessible mobile network for general consumer use like TIM, Vodafone Italia, or WindTre, RFI's network is crucial for railway safety, signalling, and operational coordination across the country. As such, it is identified within the mobile network landscape with its unique Mobile Country Code (MCC) of 222, representing Italy, and a Mobile Network Code (MNC) of 30. This combination, 222 30, uniquely pinpoints the RFI network within the global mobile communication ecosystem, crucial for device identification and network access control within its permitted operational scope.

The significance of RFI's mobile network extends beyond simple voice communication. It supports critical applications such as train control systems (e.g., Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems), infrastructure monitoring, and data transmission between trains and control centers. This specific configuration outlined by the MCC and MNC ensures proper communication channels are established solely for railway-related activities. Compared to the widely available commercial networks servicing the general public, RFI’s network employs stricter security measures and adheres to railway-specific communication protocols, ensuring the reliable and safe operation of Italy’s extensive railway infrastructure across Europe, furthering facilitating the movement of passengers and freight throughout Italy and abroad.
