Description

The University of Strathclyde isn’t actually a mobile network operator in the traditional sense, but rather it is a unique private mobile network deployed and utilized within the University of Strathclyde campus, located in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe. Operating with MCC (Mobile Country Code) 235, which identifies the United Kingdom, and MNC (Mobile Network Code) 04, this network stands apart from major UK carriers like Vodafone (MCC 234/MNC 15) or EE (MCC 234/MNC 30). It's primarily designed to support research, education, and campus operations, facilitating innovative IoT (Internet of Things) projects and providing enhanced connectivity solutions for students, staff, and researchers within the University environment. Though not a public network accessible to the broader population, its presence highlights advancements in localized mobile technology and showcases a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge communication infrastructure.

This private mobile network at the University of Strathclyde operates independently, allowing for tailored solutions specific to the University's needs. It plays a vital role in supporting various academic departments, particularly those engaged in engineering, communication technologies, and computer science research. Because of its status as a private network, it typically uses licensed or unlicensed spectrum, chosen strategically to avoid interference with major public carriers like O2 (MCC 234/MNC 10) or Three (MCC 234/MNC 20), and also allows the University a greater degree of control over network security and performance. This setup enables innovative applications, such as smart campus initiatives, environmental monitoring, and advanced sensor networks, fostering a technologically advanced learning and research environment. It showcases a microcosm of mobile network deployment and its potential for specialized applications beyond traditional public networks.
