Description

The University of Strathclyde operates a private mobile network in the United Kingdom, identified by the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 235, which designates the UK, and Mobile Network Code (MNC) 06. This distinguishes it from major commercial mobile operators like Vodafone (MCC 234/MNC 15) or EE (MCC 234/MNC 30, 33). Unlike public networks serving the broader population, Strathclyde's network provides connectivity primarily within its campus environment, supporting academic research, campus security, and potentially facilitating innovative projects related to IoT and smart city initiatives. This dedicated infrastructure allows for tailored services and control not always available through traditional mobile providers.

Strathclyde's private mobile network leverages licensed spectrum to create a closed ecosystem, delivering reliable communications within the campus grounds. The choice to implement a private network reflects the university's commitment to cutting-edge technology and a desire to have fine-grained control over network performance and security. As a European institution based in the United Kingdom, University of Strathclyde's deployment of a private mobile network adds to a growing trend of educational and research institutions adopting this strategy to drive innovation and meet specific connectivity needs that cannot be adequately addressed by established mobile network providers. The network supports various applications from internal communications to advanced research involving connected devices and large-scale data analysis.
