Description

The University of Strathclyde operates its own dedicated mobile network within its campus in Glasgow, Scotland. Designated with Mobile Country Code (MCC) 234 for the United Kingdom and Mobile Network Code (MNC) 7, this network provides connectivity primarily for students, staff, and university-related devices. This allows the university to tailor the network to its specific needs, providing secure access to internal resources and potentially offering cost-effective communication solutions compared to relying solely on commercial mobile operators like EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three. Its relatively small coverage compared to large UK national networks means its main focus is within the university premises.

Utilizing its own mobile network infrastructure enables the University of Strathclyde to implement and manage security protocols more directly, controlling access and potentially monitoring network traffic, offering a different trade-off in privacy and performance compared to connecting these devices to public networks within Glasgow, a large city where all national mobile networks operate. This control can be invaluable for research activities, secure data transfer, and supporting innovative campus-wide services. The deployment also allows a unique learning environment for engineering students related to telecommunications learning.
