Description

Lightsquared L.P. was a planned mobile broadband network in the United States, operating under Mobile Country Code (MCC) 311 and Mobile Network Code (MNC) 520. Lightsquared aimed to provide 4G LTE services across North America and the Caribbean, with a primary focus on the US market. The company’s business plan centered around wholesale network access, intending to serve a range of customers, including those in rural areas where existing cellular coverage was limited.

Lightsquared's ambition was to create a nationwide network offering competitive data rates, similar to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. However, their planned use of the L-band spectrum raised concerns about potential interference with GPS signals which ultimately led to significant regulatory challenges and the eventual bankruptcy of the company. The legacy of Lightsquared highlights the complexity of spectrum allocation in a world increasingly reliant on mobile communication, especially in large and diverse geographic regions such as the United States.
