Description

Nextel Communications, operating in the United States of America (part of the North America & Caribbean region) under MCC 316 and MNC 10, was a notable mobile network provider known for its unique push-to-talk (PTT) service, often referred to as "Direct Connect". This service distinguished it from other major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, focusing on instant voice communication akin to two-way radios, making it a popular choice for businesses and individuals requiring immediate group communication, especially in sectors like construction and transportation.

Despite its popularity, Nextel eventually faced challenges transitioning to newer technologies like 3G and 4G, leading to its acquisition by Sprint Nextel Corporation. The iDEN network infrastructure used by Nextel was ultimately decommissioned in 2013, with much of its spectrum repurposed by Sprint. While the Nextel brand is no longer active, its legacy as a pioneer in instant voice communication continues to be recognized, with elements of its PTT service being re-introduced and modernized by other carriers seeking the same instant communication functionality in their network offerings.
