Description

TATA DOCOMO, operating in Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), India, was a GSM-based mobile network that significantly contributed to the Indian telecom landscape. Officially categorized under Asia & Middle East for geographical context, the network utilized the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 405, identifying it as an Indian network, and the Mobile Network Code (MNC) 44, uniquely distinguishing it from other operators within the country. While TATA DOCOMO is no longer operational, its impact on mobile communication availability and pricing in a competitive market like Tamil Nadu remains a notable part of Indian telecom history.

During its operational period, TATA DOCOMO competed with major players such as Airtel, Vodafone Idea (formerly Vodafone and Idea Cellular), and Reliance Jio. The network aimed to provide affordable and innovative services to the mass market, particularly in a region renowned for its high mobile penetration like Tamil Nadu. Although its tenure was relatively short-lived compared to some of its longer-standing rivals, TATA DOCOMO played a role in driving down prices and increasing accessibility to mobile services for a considerable segment of the population within Tamil Nadu and Chennai. The legacy of TATA DOCOMO, even after its merger and subsequent absorption, underscores the dynamic nature of the Indian mobile network market and the relentless competition among various operators identified by their unique MCC and MNC identifiers.
