Description

Kolkata Uninor, operating in India, specifically under the Kolkata license, represents an interesting chapter in the evolution of India's mobile telecommunications landscape. Utilizing the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 405, which identifies mobile networks within India, and the Mobile Network Code (MNC) 822, Kolkata Uninor aimed to provide affordable mobile services to a significant portion of the Indian population. Although operational for a limited time, understanding its presence helps provide a comprehensive picture of mobile network diversity within the Asia & Middle East regions. Comparisons with other major Indian operators like Airtel or Vodafone Idea (now Vi) would highlight its unique position and eventual market trajectory due to the competitive environment.

Kolkata Uninor's story reflects both the opportunities and challenges of operating a mobile network in a dynamic market like India. The allocation of MCC 405 and MNC 822 signifies Uninor's official registration and operational permissions within the country. The network provided 2G services. It initially focused on providing cheaper call rates, targeting price-sensitive customers. The company was one of the new entrants that entered the market with the 2008 spectrum allocation. However, later legal complications surrounding spectrum allocation led to its eventual closure. Examining the history provides valuable insights into the factors influencing mobile network viability in India and the regulatory environment overseeing telecommunications within the broader Asian context.
