Description

Koryolink, operating in North Korea, is a fascinating case study in mobile telecommunications within a unique geopolitical landscape. As a joint venture between Cheo Technology JV Company and the state-owned Korea Post and Telecommunications Corporation (KPTE), Koryolink held a virtual monopoly over the nation's 3G mobile network for many years. Identified internationally with the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 467 and Mobile Network Code (MNC) 06, Koryolink offered a limited mobile experience primarily focused on domestic communication, with tight restrictions on internet access and international calling for most users.

Comparing Koryolink to mobile networks in other parts of Asia and the Middle East – regions known for rapidly evolving technology – highlights stark contrasts. While countries like South Korea boast world-leading 5G infrastructure and widespread mobile internet access, Koryolink's services were geared towards a specific, highly controlled environment. Although another mobile network was allegedly established in 2013 called Kangsong Net, Koryolink was the first and dominant network. Understanding Koryolink’s history and operational context provides valuable insight into the complexities of telecommunications development and accessibility within North Korea.
