Description

Queensland Rail Limited operates a unique mobile network in Australia, specifically within the Oceania region. Distinguished by its Mobile Country Code (MCC) of 505 and Mobile Network Code (MNC) of 21, this network isn't your typical public cellular provider like Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone. Instead, Queensland Rail's mobile infrastructure is strategically deployed to support its railway operations, enabling critical communication and data transmission across its vast network. This specialized application differs significantly from the consumer-focused services offered by major Australian mobile carriers, who prioritises coverage density for population.

Queensland Rail's dedicated mobile network plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the state's railway system. Key applications may include train control and communication, signalling systems, and real-time monitoring of infrastructure. Leveraging its own MCC and MNC allocation, Queensland Rail maintains greater control and reliability over its communications, tailored to the specific requirements of its railway environment. While not directly comparable in coverage footprint to nationwide networks, Queensland Rail's mobile infrastructure plays a crucial but unsung role in keeping Queensland's trains running on time and effectively across the state, and indeed is something that would be an expected setup for many railway operators across the globe.
