Description

Sishen Iron Ore Company (SIOC) (Ltd) (Pty) Mobile, operating in South Africa, is a private mobile network primarily designed to support the operational communications of the Sishen iron ore mine, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world owned by Anglo American subsidiary Kumba Iron Ore. While not generally accessible to the public, SIOC Mobile plays a critical role in ensuring efficient and safe mining operations via reliable wireless connectivity for staff, equipment, and automation systems. This network utilizes specific radio frequencies and resources distinct from the major South African mobile operators like Vodacom (MCC 655, MNC 01), MTN (MCC 655, MNC 10), Cell C (MCC 655, MNC 02), and Telkom (MCC 655, MNC 07), and is registered with its own unique Mobile Network Code.

Identified by the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 655, which denotes South Africa, and the Mobile Network Code (MNC) 17, SIOC Mobile focuses on providing optimized coverage and capacity within the mine's geographical footprint in the Northern Cape province. This localized approach contrasts with the nationwide networks of commercial providers; SIOC Mobile’s infrastructure is specifically tailored to withstand the challenging mining environment, providing durable communications and data transfer capabilities. This dedicated network setup allows for the implementation of specialized mining applications, ranging from remote equipment operation to real-time safety monitoring, contributing to increased productivity and workforce safety within the Sishen mine, operating independently from larger, publicly accessible networks within the country.
