Description

NII Holdings, operating under the Nextel brand in Argentina, provided mobile communication services primarily focused on business customers throughout the early 2000s. With a focus on push-to-talk (PTT) technology, Nextel offered a unique communication solution catering to businesses needing instant and reliable group communication, especially popular in logistics, security, and transportation sectors. Operating with the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 722, identifying Argentina, and the Mobile Network Code (MNC) 20, Nextel distinguished itself from competitors like Movistar (Telefónica), Personal (Telecom Argentina), and Claro (América Móvil) by offering a different service proposition rather than focusing purely on traditional consumer mobile phone services.

Despite its initial success and unique offering, NII Holdings faced significant challenges adapting to the evolving mobile landscape dominated by 3G and 4G technologies. Competitors invested heavily in these faster technologies, while Nextel's focus remained on its iDEN network for a considerable time. The rise of smartphones and the increasing affordability of traditional mobile data plans also eroded Nextel's competitive advantage. Ultimately, NII Holdings filed for bankruptcy and eventually sold its operations in Argentina. The frequencies once used by Nextel have since been reallocated, marking the end of an era for this distinctive mobile network in the South American market.
