Description

Infrabel, operating in Belgium (MCC 206), stands out as a rather unique mobile network using MNC 02. Unlike Proximus, Orange Belgium, or Telenet which primarily deliver mobile communication services to the public, Infrabel's network is primarily focused on supporting secure and reliable railway operations. As Belgium's railway infrastructure manager, Infrabel utilizes its mobile network for critical communications, including train control, signalling, and internal staff communication, ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the Belgian rail network. Their focused application contrasts sharply with the consumer-oriented services of other Belgian mobile operators, illustrating the diverse ways mobile network technology is applied across Europe.

While specific details about Infrabel's network technology aren't typically consumer-facing, it's reasonable to assume they leverage robust and secure technologies, potentially including GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) or more modern solutions to meet the stringent reliability and safety demands of railway operations. The network would have to provide reliability of coverage along the entire railway line which includes rural areas, as well as areas near other countries like France, Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg. Understanding the specific technologies employed by Infrabel provides valuable insight into a less-visible but highly critical application of mobile network technology within Belgium and the broader European transportation infrastructure.
