Description

Assam AIRCEL, operating in India (Asia & Middle East), was a mobile network utilizing the Mobile Country Code (MCC) 404 and Mobile Network Code (MNC) 29. Aircel, at its peak, aimed to provide affordable mobile services across India, including the geographically challenging Assam region, known for its diverse landscapes and connectivity hurdles. While competing with larger national players like Airtel, Vodafone Idea (formerly Vodafone and Idea Cellular), and Reliance Jio, Aircel carved a niche by focusing on value-driven packages and reaching underserved communities. Their efforts contributed to increased mobile penetration in Assam and the wider Northeast India, fostering communication and economic opportunities for many.

Unfortunately, Aircel faced significant financial difficulties and regulatory challenges, ultimately leading to its insolvency proceedings in 2018. The network, once a prominent feature of the Indian telecom landscape, ceased operations after struggling with debt and intense competition. The legacy of Aircel, remains a lesson in the dynamic nature of the Indian telecom market, where aggressive pricing, infrastructure investments, and regulatory navigation are crucial for long-term success. For individuals in Assam and other regions formerly served by Aircel, the transition to alternative providers required navigating SIM card replacements and porting existing mobile numbers to newer networks.
