FirstNet, operating on the 700 MHz band in the United States (MCC 313), represents a dedicated nationwide public safety broadband network. With the Mobile Network Code (MNC) 110, it prioritizes first responders, providing them with reliable and secure communication capabilities crucial during emergencies, disasters, and everyday operations. Unlike commercial mobile networks which can become congested, FirstNet is engineered for resilience and dedicated bandwidth to ensure seamless connectivity for police, fire, EMS, and other public safety personnel across all 50 states, including territories in North America & the Caribbean. Established in the wake of the September 11th attacks to address critical communication interoperability gaps, FirstNet is built and maintained by AT&T under a contract with the First Responder Network Authority. The network uses Band 14 spectrum, specifically allocated for public safety, which offers superior coverage characteristics, including better building penetration and wider area coverage compared to higher-frequency bands used by other mobile networks. This allows first responders to communicate effectively, share data, and access vital information, enhancing situational awareness and improving response times. Its unique mission sets it apart from standard commercial networks like Verizon or T-Mobile, as it focuses on serving the unique needs of the United States' public safety community.
